The <\/span>selection<\/span> of the farmers has been affected by their level of interest in the topic, both for demonstrative and innovative farms. The presentation of the <\/span>Greensheep<\/span> project was made by <\/span>immediately<\/span> highlighting the connections between climate change and the economic benefits obtainable by the farms; but despite this, not all the farmers were interested. It can be said <\/span>that basically, the<\/span> CC topic stimulated greater interest with those farmers who are regularly updating, who relate to the environment around them and wish to improve themselves in various aspects and keep up with the times.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Yes, the selection was affected by the lack of incentives to decrease the carbon footprint of the farms and by the fact that the farmers focus on short-term objectives and problems.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

As we said before…, the main argument used during the selection process, (beside previously buit trust), was that higher efficiency of various farm activities (feeding efficiency) means not only a reduced carbon footprint \/ unit of products, but also higher profits for the farmers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Advisers<\/span> and <\/span>farmers<\/span> are <\/span>usually<\/span> more <\/span>focused<\/span> on short <\/span>term<\/span> deadlines and <\/span>growing<\/span> administrative <\/span>tasks<\/span>. The <\/span>economic<\/span> situation (high production <\/span>costs<\/span>), <\/span>togegher<\/span> with<\/span> the <\/span>general<\/span> situation of <\/span>lack<\/span> of <\/span>generational<\/span> turnover in <\/span>sheep<\/span> farming<\/span>\u00a0 and the <\/span>abandonment<\/span> of the <\/span>territory<\/span> (<\/span>difficulties<\/span> to <\/span>get<\/span> labour <\/span>resources<\/span> for the <\/span>farms<\/span>), <\/span>sometimes<\/span> generates<\/span> a <\/span>depressing<\/span> atmosphere<\/span> bettween<\/span> farmers<\/span> and <\/span>lack<\/span> of <\/span>willingness<\/span> to test innovations. <\/span>To <\/span>get<\/span> involved<\/span> In t<\/span>he <\/span>project<\/span> we<\/span> tr<\/span>y<\/span> to focus the attention in the objectives of<\/span> improving<\/span> the <\/span>technical<\/span> (and <\/span>also<\/span> hopefully<\/span> economic<\/span>) <\/span>indicators.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

Behaviour<\/span> change <\/span>is<\/span> difficult<\/span> in <\/span>general<\/span>, <\/span>this<\/span> is<\/span> not unique <\/span>across<\/span> farmers<\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>Teagasc<\/span> have long been <\/span>advocating<\/span> from<\/span> adoption of <\/span>environmentally<\/span> friendly<\/span> practices and technologies and <\/span>with<\/span> both<\/span> an <\/span>research<\/span> and extension arm are in a good <\/span>space<\/span> to <\/span>try<\/span> and influence <\/span>farmers<\/span>.\u00a0 To drive change <\/span>Teagasc<\/span> initiated<\/span> a joint <\/span>industry-farmer<\/span> initiative to <\/span>promote<\/span> change and adoption of best practice in <\/span>this<\/span> space<\/span> called<\/span> the \u201c<\/span>Teagasc<\/span> Signpost<\/span> Programme\u201d <\/span>this<\/span> overlaps<\/span> with<\/span> the objectives of the LIFE Green <\/span>Sheep<\/span> programme and <\/span>helps<\/span> motivate<\/span> advisors<\/span> and <\/span>farmers<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n

As mentioned above, we are beginning to have tangible arguments and to take local action to involve farmers. These points are worked on and presented to the advisers when they are trained in the tools, so that they have as many arguments as possible to be able to recruit farmers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/em>In addition to trainings, we regularly organise meetings with advisers to discuss this subject.\u00a0<\/em>The livestock sectors in France are keen to work on the GHG emissions mitigation issue and to integrate it into their advice.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n
