Under the slogan \u201cAlready sustainable livestock farming to make it even more sustainable<\/strong>,\u201d the 39th edition of FEMOGA, the Los Monegros Industrial, Agricultural, and Livestock Fair, hosted a new technical conference dedicated to the challenges of the 21st century in the agricultural and livestock sector. The event, held on September 19, 2025<\/strong>, focused on two fundamental areas: the incorporation of new technologies applied to the sector and the evaluation of sustainability and good practices in livestock production.
\nRoberto Ruiz and Nerea Mandaluniz<\/strong>, researchers at Neiker, presented a detailed analysis of the sustainability of sheep farming for meat and milk in Spain and Europe<\/strong> within the framework of the LIFE Green Sheep Project<\/strong>, a European initiative that promotes the transition to more environmentally friendly production models.
\nHaving defined the project’s objectives and working methodology, their presentation focused in particular on 41 cases of demostrative and innova<\/strong>tive sheep flocks in Aragon (Oviarag\u00f3n) and calculations of gross and net emissions<\/strong>, which take into account carbon sequestration<\/strong> by soils and plants.<\/p>\n

The results of this work give rise to opportunities in the form of good practices<\/strong> (BATs-Best Available Techniques or practices) that include specific strategies for addressing the main challenges facing the sector: improving farm profitability, mitigating<\/strong> and adapting to climate change<\/strong>, and promoting generational renewal<\/strong> in a key area for rural development.
\nAs an example of efficient practice, Nerea Mandaluniz presents the Regenerative Rotational Grazing<\/strong> model, detailing the key points for its implementation and the short- and medium-term advantages over other systems, both for livestock and for the soil: greater water retention, fertility, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration. She concludes with the presentation of the Regenerative Grazing protocol published in collaboration between Neiker and Oviarag\u00f3n.
\nThis conference at Femoga demonstrates that sustainability is not just a goal, but a constantly evolving process that combines innovation, scientific knowledge, and social commitment<\/strong> to guarantee the future of livestock farming and the rural environment.
