On 30 March 2025, Neiker organised an Open Day for family and friends to visit our headquarters in the Campus of Arkaute and learn more about our work and raison d’être.
Among other lines of research, they were able to visit our Latxa sheep dairy flock and how we are tackling the challenge of decarbonising livestock farming. Firstly, we explained the origin of enteric methane emissions from the fermentation of grass or pasture in ruminants, as well as their real relevance in the total context of greenhouse gas emissions in the Basque Country. We then presented the equipment and facilities we have to measure enteric methane emissions, and the innovative practices we are implementing in the framework of the LIFE GREEN SHEEP project to reduce our carbon footprint over 12%, such as regenerative rotational grazing and the use of oilseed cakes as substitutes for soya.
The event was attended by 150 people and there was also time to chat, walk around and enjoy a tasty lunch with the best company.
