On Friday, 31 October 2024 the annual meeting with the General Assembly of the Consorzio Agnello di Sardegna IGP took place in Sardinia. It is an important and awaited event both by the rural world and by those of the industrialists linked to this sector. On this occasion, the Consortium’s budget is discussed and Director Alessandro Mazzette explains the economic results achieved in the last year. Gabriella Serra and Marco Acciaro (AGRIS Sardegna) were invited to talk about the Greensheep project, which involves many of the farmers of the Consorzio Agnello IGP.
Marco Acciaro summarised the results obtained from the use of the Cap2er software (1st level) on 104 dairy sheep farms (demonstrative farms), in particular the gross emissions, carbon storage and average net carbon footprint of these farms. He discussed the possibility to classify demonstrative farms into intensive, semi-intensive, semi-extensive and extensive by means of a composite index. Finally, he showed the results in terms of gross emissions, carbon storage and net carbon footprint of different types of sheep farms, as well as the factors that determine these emissions.
Gabriella Serra illustrated some examples from the use of the 2nd level of Cap2er on innovative farms. In this case, farms apply mitigation actions aimed at reducing the carbon footprint of their production. Gabriella explained how, with these actions, in addition to reducing the environmental impacts of sheep production, the farms have more efficient productions, achieving an improvement in economic results. She then showed some concrete cases through simulations of mitigation actions made with Cap2er.
The interest in both presentations was high, and the following speeches emphasised how the results of the Greensheep project can constitute an additional tool to enhance sheep production in Sardinia.
