Celadas (Teruel) hosted on June 18, 2024 the first Open Day of the LIFE GREN SHEEP project, which brought together farmers and technical participants to discuss the effect of livestock farming on the environment, and some interesting agricultural and livestock farming practices to mitigate its environmental impact.

The day began with a general presentation of the project, the tasks and results achieved. The results of the carbon footprint of the 41 sheep meat farms in Aragon analyzed in the LIFE GREEN SHEEP project were presented, giving a picture of the impact and profitability of semi-extensive livestock farming at present.

Certain practices that can contribute to reducing the carbon footprint and improving sustainability were also presented. For example, the use of native varieties of sainfoin and rye seeds for sowing and use by livestock is a good example of good practices applied by livestock farming in favor of more sustainable production. Even an economic assessment was made of the impact of increasing the agricultural area for grazing (with cereal and sainfoin), as well as the resulting carbon footprint.

The event was attended by 10 farmers, 3 technicians and a representative of the cooperative’s board of directors, who is also a farmer. The day was characterized by a great atmosphere and remarkable motivation, and ended with a lunch.
